I so agree re: the correlation between Cobain and Lennon. Kurt was blossoming as the Lennon for his generation, and I qualify this weighty statement simply by the quality and originality of Kurt's music and lyrics, coupled with the emotion he could convey to his listeners, and the connection he formed with his audience via the music. Few artists have ever nurtured this.
Interestingly and sadly, Grunge and Alternative was the last time a totally new musical genre came forth without being manufactured and pre-processed by the record labels. They resented this, and as we know, scampered after-the-fact to sign a plethora of other Alt/Rock bands. Since Nirvana, the record industry seems to have vowed never to allow a new genre of music to emerge from it's own street momentum.
That is why the recording industry is a dinosaur and all but extinct. Mediocrity and bland, topical product is the order of the day. The labels simply sign @!$%#ty bands. That is why sales are dismal, not the formats verses online purchasing.
Kurt Cobain would have most likely continued to make groundbreaking music, with or without Nirvana. He also would have wisely pushed for talented unknowns to have the opportunity to earn exposure, like he did. His distinctive voice is very missed.
